On-going research with adults…

Structure of the spoken discourse of individuals on the spectrum

Structure of the spoken discourse of individuals on the spectrum

Identifying name: Phil-2

Date : July 2018-October 2018

Participants:  (1) Adolescents (from 16 years old onwards) and adults with a diagnosis of High-Functioning Autism, without language delay (2) Adolescents (from 16 years old onwards) and adults with typical development

Funding: MIS

Summary: Studies suggest that the structure of the spoken discourse of individuals on the spectrum is more difficult to follow than that of typically developing individuals. However, this conclusion is essentially based on analyses of written transcriptions, what about the perception of discourse structure in real-time? And how do individuals on spectrum perceive our spoken discourse?

Study procedure:  The study consists of 3 sessions. • Session 1: During this session you will perform various tasks tapping on memory, attention, vocabulary, etc. to confirm that our study is adapted to your profile. • Session 2 (optional): The ADOS-2 will be administered to you, task during which you will be asked questions on your hobbies, studies, work, future projects, etc. as well as asked to do small activities (e.g. making a puzzle). • Session 3: During this session, you will perform a rating task on a computer. You will listen to several extracts of a conversation between two people, and each extract will be followed by short questions.

Lexical skills and dialogues understanding in adults

Lexical skills and dialogues understanding in adults

Identifying name:SOC-002

Date:February 2019 - December 2019

Participants: (1) French-speaking adults (aged 18 or more) diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder; (2) French-speaking typically-developed adults (aged 18 or more)

Funding: F.R.S.-FNRS (grant FRESH); David & Alice Van Buuren’s funds

Study procedure: The study is composed of 3 sessions. (1) Session 1: you will first wear two little electrodes on your non-dominant hand as well as eye-tracking glasses to record what interests you. This material is harmless. During the first phase, you will be asked to define several usual words. For the second phase, you will quit the material and watch a screen on which will be displayed some dialogues you will have to pay attention to, in order to answer short questions. (2) Session 2 (optional): you will perform various tasks (memory, attention, vocabulary, etc.) to allow us to get a better picture of your profile. If you have already been involved in an ACTE study, you might not have to repeat this session. (3) Session 3 (optional): if you have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, without having been interviewed in the context of the ADOS-2, it will be administered to you: you will be asked questions about your hobbies, studies, work, future projects, etc. and you will have to realize some short activities (e.g. doing a puzzle).
